Living History and Ghost Stories at the Inn

Are ghost hunters and historians able to coexist?  Can stories from the past include a belief in the sprirt world?  Here at Lightner Farmhouse we believe that the two are simply opposite sides of the same coin and that history is learned and preserved both through artifiacts and through stories.  Read our written history of the Farm, walk the house and grounds to get a "feel" for the property and listen to Eileen as she tells you both the history and the folklore of our site and of the town.  Because the farm was used as a Civil War hospital for three weeks in July, 1863, Eileen's stories tell about a farm family who experienced the full horrors of war.

When you visit the Lightner Farmhouse, schedule a tour with Ghost storyteller, Miss Betty who is shown below, and who will take you on a private Haunted Tour showing you a few of the local sites followed by a storytelling session at one of the Civil War hospital sites.  She portrays a Southern widow looking for her lost husband years after the Battle of Gettysburg and her stories give insight into the suffering of the families following the war. The fee for the storytelling tour is $20 per person.  Combine a storytelling tour with Miss Betty along with dinner at J's at the Village and save $20.  Dinner coupon for $50, storytelling for two people all for $70.  Please book in advance of arrival.

Is Lightner Farmhouse haunted?  Our answer is that we do not know.  Apparently there is not a resident ghost, but some guests experience the presence of "spirits".  Also photos of orbs around the area where the Civil War Barn was located are common.  If you are interested in the paranormal and hauntings, you will love Gettysburg Paranormal Society's 3 hour paranormal investigation.  Spend the first 30 minutes learning to use the investigative equipment you will be using including EMF meters, K2 meters, infra-red laser guided digital thermometers and digital voice recorders.  Then spend an exciting 2 1/2 hours conducting a mini investigation with GPS founder, Betty Roche.  Ms. Roche will be taking pictures during the entire event and will provide you with a free disk of the best pictures.  The tour is available only to guests of the Lightner Farmhouse B&B.  All tours begin and end at the B&B.  The cost of the tour is $25 per person .  Tours are not suitable for children under 8.  Please remember to wear sturdy shoes and long pants.

Our storytellers are independent contractors and may charge cancellation fees for last minute cancellations and  may ask for a credit card to hold the reservation for the tour.
